Don't Just Tell Me Your Story

Don't Just Tell Me Your Story

Today I’d like to speak to all the people who are using ‘their story’ as a way of marketing on Facebook. I understand that every marketing guru tells you to share your story as a way of attracting your client or customer to you.

But I’m seeing heart-breaking stories everywhere in my Facebook feed. People sharing disasters and dramas that they’ve experienced and how they come through the other side to finally create their dream life. A lot of these stories sound hollow. Some sound like a marketing spiel rather than a true life experience

We’ve all had difficulties and dramas in our lives. I’ve certainly had my fair share and I’m sure I will have more … isn’t that the nature of life? I’ve overcome difficulties and continue to work on things that I want to improve at a pace and timeframe that feels right to me.

Even if your story is completely true, your experience and mine are not the same even if they appear similar from the outside.

So here’s the thing. Although I empathise with your story, to be completely honest, I’m fed up with hearing about it.

I’ll tell you how your miraculous story of success makes me feel.

It makes me feel small. As if in some way I have failed, or that I’m not as clever, smart or successful as you because my story is still a work in progress.

The truth is you’re pushing me away.

You talk about how something changed and you now have everything you’ve ever desired. But you talk about it like you waved a magic wand and everything suddenly came together. I don’t see your journey. I don’t see how you felt … and I can’t feel your emotion.

And when I reach out to you, I see clearly that your story is exactly that. A story made up as a way of drawing me in.

What is the purpose of you telling me your story?

Are you trying to impress me?

Are you trying to build a following?

Is it to attract me as a client?

How can you truly help me? You may have created the perfect life for you, but how can you help create the perfect life for me?

My definition of happiness, my definition of success and my definition of abundance is different from yours.

How do I know this?

Because we each live in our own universe and what is true for you may be the opposite of what I believe. And the way you have helped yourself achieve what you want, may not work for me at all. We both live in a physical body but the way my brain is programmed to work is not the same as yours. My experiences have shaped me just as yours have shaped you.

So, yes it’s important to let people know about who you are, about your life and the experiences that have taken you to where you are. But when you do it in a way that makes me feel less, that makes me feel small, not as good as you or that creates sadness for me, your story pushes me away.

If you are putting your story out as a way of receiving honour or respect for your struggle, then your message will not resonate with me. I’m not looking for someone who is ‘better’ than me and I don’t want to feel ‘less’ than you.

And do you know what?

I don’t want other people to feel less either.

I don’t want people who are suffering to ‘buy in’ to your story of success.

I don’t want to think of how you have tricked them with a story of hope that has nothing to do with them and everything to do with you.

Please share more of how you solved your issues.

More of exactly what you did to change the patterning of a lifetime.

I want to hear the reality of your story, not just the magazine version.

And I want to hear the story of how you can help me and how you can help others.

My work is about offering solutions.

I offer my time and knowledge to help you rise.

To help you become healthy, wealthy, abundant, rich … whatever it is that YOU want.

To understand your soul so you can finally live the life you deserve.

So although I have a story to tell, you will not hear me shouting from the rooftops about how I helped myself.

Instead, you will hear stories about how others have been helped.

Stories about how people’s lives have been improved and sometimes even transformed as a result of working with me as their guide.

Because it’s not about me.

It’s all about you, about the place you come from.

I’m simply here to guide you with all my heart knowledge and wisdom.
