Coronavirus - Support Your Immune System
Modern medicine does not have the answers when it comes to the treatment of coronavirus, or any other virus. We’re all reliant on our immune system to protect us
Your immune system is a collection of billions of cells that travel through the bloodstream. They move in and out of organs and tissues, defending against foreign bodies (antigens) such as bacteria, viruses (including coronavirus) and cancerous cells. Your immune system is literally the gatekeeper to your health and wellbeing. It’s your body’s armor, the first line of defence against attack.
But your immune system has an enemy and it’s not the coronavirus!
That enemy is stress.
Stress weakens your immune system creating holes that arrows can pierce.
Today those arrows are called coronavirus … tomorrow who knows?
Let’s look at stress for a moment. The word stress is a simple term that refers to a myriad of situations and experiences including:
- work pressure
- constant busyness
In 1967, Holmes and Rahe developed a system for measuring stress called the Holmes-Rahe Stress Inventory (take the stress test)
In times of great change such as we’re experiencing right now in the global fight against the coronavirus, the possibility of stress is extremely high. For most people, this is a given as much of what they’ve previously taken for granted, is unavailable right now. They’re forced to stay home, banned from socializing in person and for many, their income has disappeared. With no certainty around when things will return to ‘normal’ many people are anxious about the future.
It’s understandable when you look at the circumstances.
The problem is that anxiety and other stressors releases hormones and chemicals in the body that reduce your immune system’s ability to fight off antigens making you more susceptible to infection from bacteria and viruses. In effect, anxiety about the impact of coronavirus is degrading your immune system just when you need it the most!
So how can you support your immune system to support you?
There’s two key ways to reduce your chances of illness from coronavirus (and other viruses).
The first step is to do everything you can to preserve and improve your immune system by paying attention to what you’re allowing into your mind and body
- Eat fresh fruit and vegetables wherever possible to provide your body with the building blocks it needs to keep your cells healthy. Even if your country is currently on lockdown, it is usually possible to go out to buy food. If you have access to organic fruits and vegetable, this will reduce the amount of chemicals that are entering your body
- Drink plenty of water to flush out waste and toxins that can accumulate particularly in times of stress
- Make time each day to connect with yourself through meditation or self-reflection
- Get regular fresh air exercise fresh air and plenty of sleep
- Keep yourself informed but don’t allow yourself to be inundated with the constant barrage of coronavirus media coverage. The drama of the reporting will keep you in anxiety – the very stress you want to avoid
- Limit your time on social media but connect with others in ways that bring laughter and joy
Reducing anxiety, simplifying your life and going back to basic self-care alleviates stress on your body and allows your immune system to support you.

Remember, stress is enemy of your immune system.
The biggest reason elderly people are more likely to succumb to coronavirus is that they’ve had a lifetime of stress which has degraded their immune system. Their armor is weak and full of holes that allow arrows of bacteria and viruses to get through. In many cases they’re already experiencing the manifestation of that stress. Cancer, heart disease, diabetes, respiratory disease, fluid retention, high blood pressure … these are all the result of long term stress and pressure on the body.
You may have accepted that illness is a natural part of ageing but it doesn’t have to be this way. You can support your immune system to support you throughout your entire lifetime.
